Playa Blanca is Lanzarote's newest resort town on the southern coast. It is the newest of three resorts situated on one of the most ancient Canary Islands. Strategically located amid what would have been a state-of-the-art golf course, the island boasts a beautiful marina and spacious hotels. It is eye-catching with a promenade of restaurants and shops. While the location doesn't quite feel like that of Spain or the Canaries, it still has a nice atmosphere.

What to see and do in Playa Blanca

An exciting island to travel to, there's lots to keep you engaged. For instance, the north island expert-guided photo tour or a full-day bus tour to Fuerteventura giving you access to the volcanoes' scenic views. Playa Blanca's highlight is the Papagayo Beach, swimmable and calm due to the protruding cliffs that protect the golden beaches. It was declared a nature reserve due to its jaw-dropping beauty, and a small entry fee is required. Stroll the pedestrian 5.5-mile walkway that connects all the bars and beaches, breaking only where the port intersection lies.


Marina Rubicon offers a street market worth wandering through to purchase souvenirs; it specialises in crafted items produced locally. A short distance past is Castillo de las Coloradas, a defensive fortification atop a peninsula offering eccentric views along the cliffs and over the sea. Enjoy the Pechiguera Lighthouse; standing at 50m, it is the island's tallest. Explore the underwater sculpture museum, Europe's only, home to numerous marine life variations due to the artificial reef it created below the surface. On the north coast of Fuerteventura lies Isla de Lobos, a rugged island that is a nature reserve and offers epic landscapes.

What to eat in Playa Blanca

The most common cuisine, given the location, is Spanish cuisine or modern international; they do get quite creative and add twists to the original meals. A local favourite is the grilled duck in miso sauce, apple alioli, and cod with ratatouille. Prime sirloin steak combined with foie gras is another favourite served with caramelised onions and sherry. Most menus will have fish dominating with traditional meat additions such as beef dolmades and lamb kleftiko.


Typical events and festivals in Playa Blanca

Lanzarote offers plenty of interesting and well worth attending events and fiestas. Almost all these festivals have religious origins, but to be involved, you need not be a Conejero or a Catholic. Some of these events include:


  • Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores: It is held annually in September. This is a pilgrimage to celebrate an 1824 occurrence when lava from a volcanic eruption miraculously halted its way beyond the settlement of Mancha Blanca.
  • Fiesta de San Gines: Held in mid-August for about ten days, this major festival commemorates Saint San Gines, the patron of Arrecife.
  • Nuestra Señora del Carmen: The maritime procession is the highlight of this Saints Day festivities held from mid-July to late July.
  • Carnaval: Usually the last week of February or early March and stretching for a week, the Carnaval features riotous dance and music, decorated floats, and fantastic costumes.
  • Canarian Day: Celebrated on the 30th of May, the fiesta celebrates the Canarian culture signifying the day autonomy from Spain was first gained by the Canaries in 1983. Game hunting, fishing, and wrestling competitions take place during this event.

How to move around in Playa Blanca

The most popular mode of urban public transport is the shuttle service that operates daily in half-hour schedules between 6:30 am and 10:00 pm. Apart from that, public transport tends to be infrequent and sparse, and most residents opt to use their personal vehicles to get around. As such, you may want to consider a car rental while visiting this town to have a much more pleasant trip. Hire one conveniently from Destinia, for affordability and reliability. The urban bus on the island has a circular route, and there are no trains. Alternatively, you can hire a bike as there are several sidewalks just about everywhere in the city.


The climate in Playa Blanca

You would most probably encounter decent weather at nice average temperatures between 20°C (68°F) and 25°C (77°F) during January to May, then November and December. July to September is, on average, the warmest months. The dry seasons are January through to June, then August, October, and November. August is the warmest month at an average of 29°C (84°F). The chilliest month is January, with temperatures of 20°C (69°F) on average. The wettest month is December. Basically, Playa Blanca is perfect for visiting all year round with a few months that may require layering.
