San Francisco, along with Los Angeles, are the two largest cities on the West Coast of the United States. Located in California, it has much fewer inhabitants than its neighbor Los Angeles, but is an equally famous city.
San Francisco is located in a bay where ancient indigenous peoples settled due to the benefits of these lands. But it was not until the end of the 18th century when the first discoverers acclimatized to this area. In the middle of the 19th century, this city suffered a large population growth with the arrival of the gold rush. Since then, San Francisco is one of the cities most often referred to by nationals and foreigners.
The most international symbol of this city is the Golden Gate Bridge, connecting the cities San Francisco and Oakland. The city is also well known for its steep streets and the impossible trams that traverse it, leaving a very particular image that has been shown onscreen on many an occasion. It is here in San Francisco where also the famous prison of Alcatraz is found. A prison that can be visited today by taking a ferry from the bay.
The remaining characteristics of this city are part of a variety of circumstances and activities, and it is in San Francisco, after New York, where the best and newest theaters are presented. It is also here where the famous University of Berkeley is located, and the vineyards of one of the best wines in the world. San Francisco is also one of the most interesting places for technology, as it has some of the most important technology parks in the world; Silicon Valley, where a multitude of companies exist that are specialized in high technologies.
But this city is also important in social terms and San Francisco is considered to be the most open city from all cities of the States of America, and the Gay capital of the country due to its tolerant attitude. It was also the capital of the Hippie and Bohemian movements of the 1960s and 1970s.
